Introduction:
Ulead VideoStudio 7 is a powerful and flexible video editor suitable for both ambitious beginners and intermediate videographers. You need a pretty beefy system to make it work, though. That said, VideoStudio is head and shoulders above the rest in editing flexibility. It features two video and two audio tracks and allows overlays. It's the only program in our roundup that lets you move within a clip by punching in a time code. And it's the only program that plays back audio as you drag the cursor through the timeline. The 113 transitions, 35 effects, and 33 title styles are all highly configurable. VideoStudio's output options are terrific. The program can write DVDs, VCDs, and SVCDs with simple main and chapter menus. You can fool with frame rates and resolutions to your heart's content. On our tests, VideoStudio was the slowest program at rendering WMV files, but it placed in the middle of the pack with MPEG-1 files. If your PC is powerful enough to handle it, Ulead...
VideoStudio 7 is a wonderful bridge between level video editors and higher-end software. Ulead recommends you have a system with at least a 1.4-GHz Pentium 4 and 512MB of RAM. The program stuttered on our inadequate Celeron-based machine. On a system with an Athlon XP 1800+ and 512MB of RAM, the program became usable for editing, but there was still a noticeable delay between pressing the preview button and the start of the preview. And VideoStudio's interface is complicated. Seven "step" buttons, from capture to share, sit above the main work area; we found it frustrating to click on the effects and title buttons before applying effects and titles.
